Web-based multitrack recorder

SUMMARY

This application will let the user record mutliple audio tracks on top of each other to a click/beat. Output file: stereo mp3.

This application should work like a heavily slimmed-down version of popular recording software such as cubase, logic etc.

SPECIFICATIONS:

METRONOME:

* The user can set the bpm (beats per minute) of the click (20-300 bpm possible)
* The click can be turned on/off
* Pre-click, before recording starts, can be set (1-8 clicks)
* The volume of the click can be set
* The application is to be designed in a way that will make it easy to replace the click with a drum beat in the future

MULTI-TRACK FEATURES:

* The user should be able to record a couple of tracks on top of each other, one-at-a-time (if there are no technical differences between 8 and 20 tracks we would like this application to have as many as possible)
* The user should always have the option to remove and redo any of the recorded tracks
* The user should have the option to pan any track to extreme left, extreme right or anything in between
* The user can set the volume of each track (0-128 dB)
* The user can either choose to playback the recorded material, or record a new track

OUTPUT FILE

* If possible - automatic compression/limiter/maximizing of the output stereo file
* mp3 bitrate of 128
* Non paying members only get access to an html page with the mp3 embedded into a flash player. (we have one of our own if needed)

FUNCTIONALITY

A typical recording session could look like this

0. User chooses a name for the song/session
1. User sets bpm and amount of pre-clicks
2. User records desired amount of tracks
3. User adjusts the panning and volume
4. User clicks “Create my song” which leads to the stereo mp3
5. The user should then have the option to return to “Multi-Track Session” - to keep recording more tracks to the song, or fix a specific track. The “Multi-Track Session” should be available for two months and is then to be deleted from the server (along with the mp3 files, and other files associated with the session).

Steps 1-3 should be constantly available through the interface - so that the user easily can adjust them at any time.


OUTPUT PAGE SPECIFICATIONS:

Paying members should have the following included in their output page.

* H1 title with name of the song/session
* Streamed audio through the flash mp3 player
* Download link to mp3 file
* Tell a friend form, which includes: user’s name - user’s email address - four friends email fields.

>Prewritten email with topic: “[users name] has just recorded a song called [project name]”.

The user should have the option to change the text in the prewritten email.



NON SUBSCRIBER LIMITATIONS:

Non paying members (members access is currently controlled with htaccess and mysql on an apache server) should have the following restrictions:

* No output mp3 - instead of the mp3, non-paying members get an html page with the mp3 embedded into a flash-player
* Maximum of three tracks
* Maximum one minute recording
* “Multi-track session” only saved for 20 days

The solution is to be compatible with Windows, MacOS, Internet Explorer, Firefox, Safari.
